Tamarack Country Club is one of the most preserved examples of a Charles Banks design. Following in the footsteps of his mentor Seth Raynor, Banks also used the common MacDonald templates with a more geometric feel. Perhaps even more than Raynor though, Banks was not afraid to be bold and Tamarack remains as one of his boldest. The site itself isn't very dramatic, so the greens height and steepness provide the drama. Over the years, some bunkers had been filled in or split into two, and the fairway bunkers had become a shell of themselves with mostly oval shapes and not much depth or interest. In addition to restoring the bunkering footprint and steepening the green side bunkers, the main goal of this project was to create fairway bunkers that reflected a similar boldness to the greens. This was done by using the dirt from digging the bunkers to create taller and more abrupt landforms for the bunkers to sit into. This gave them a deep and shadowy look that creates that boldness both in aesthetic, but also in their prominence when playing as to now enter a bunker could very well mean it is impossible to reach the green.
