First designed in 1898 by Robert Pryde, New Haven CC has a long and storied history. What began as a simple golf course near Albertus Magnus college was quickly overrun by college students and thus Pryde and a group of members found the site of today's golf course a few miles north near Lake Whitney. Eventually, the club saw fit to completely redesign the golf course and hired Willie Park Jr. for the job in 1922. It was the goal of this project to restore the golf course to that of Park's design. Green pads were expanded and all bunkers were rebuilt with some needing to be wholly restored or eliminated. Perhaps the most dramatic change was that of the 4th hole. All greenside bunkers were removed, and the 9th tee box sitting behind the 4th green was blown up and rebuilt. This restored the visual of this perched up green with sharp falls as the class "infinity" green it deserves to be. My hope is that this golf course now stands as one of the best examples of Willie Park's work in America and that we have done his original vision the justice it deserves.
